Essentially self taught, designer Robert J. Sorrell became interested in jewelry through his fascination with classic Hollywood films, many of which made extensive use of jewelry to enhance the glamour of the day. To create jewelry of his own, as a child, Sorrell first tried stringing beads. These early efforts slowly developed into incorporating stones, settings, stampings, casting and plating. The results evolved into a product inspired by period jewelry but larger, bolder and fresher. Generally using only glass stones of Austrian, German and/or Czech origin, Sorrell Originals, a company which Robert started in 1985, has achieved notable success in fashion, theatre, film and TV. His pieces have also been featured in several books and periodicals. Paris couturier Thierry Mugler is most responsible for the prominence Sorrell has achieved and maintained. Beginning in 1994, Sorrell started executing design pieces for Mugler’s couture, and, in 2003, he created pieces for Zumanity of the Cirque De Soleil show, further establishing the reputation of Sorrell Originals. Robert Sorrell has undertaken extensive research into many periods and aspects of the design, manufacture and wearing of important jewelry, precious or otherwise. Each Sorrell Original is unique. No two are identical. Borrowing from well known French designer Suzanne Belperron, Robert likes to say “my style is my signature”.
